Background/History Information about Sexology Clinic
The prevalence of sexual dysfunction is not exactly known in many communities. Previous studies
have given conflicting statistics, some as low 30%, others as high as 70% of people having a sex
problem at one point or another. Further, there are people who do not necessarily have a sexual
problem but need guidance and reassurance to achieve a satisfactory sex life. This may include
people with diverse sexual orientation, sex workers, people with disabilities, or those with chronic
diseases such as cancer.
Despite the need to streamline and make Sexual Health scientific, much stigma surrounds the
subject. People generally do not talk about sex as a result. Many are suffering in silence with severe
mental and psychological consequences. Stigma is further perpetuated by lack of policies to guide
the practice of sexual health.
Worse still, there are very few trained service providers in Sexual Medicine. The reason is that
stigma has also impacted training and there are barely any accredited courses in Sexual Health.
The Sexology Clinic is founded on the basis that despite the huge demand for sexual health services,
education and policy, there are not many organizations fully focused on this subject. There are also
many unqualified providers of the service and regulation is weak while stigma is very high.
